For the 01' model year, more weight was shaved off the middleweight by means of a lighter weight igniter, a more compact and light weight battery al-la R7 style, and a lighter front fork. Engine and transmission changes such as new connecting rods and pistons to reduce oil use and improve throttle response, improved shifting feel through transmission and camshaft optimizations, and even updated Dunlop tire models.

A limited edition and numbered "Champions Edition" model with special graphics was produced. Other new styling, such as dual rear tail light were now LED are also in the lineup change on the 01' model.
